Every once in a while I like to google to see if I can find my dragon tattoo that was stolen a few years ago to be put on a book cover to see if its still being used somewhere.
And of course, I have. The folks over at
Dragon Pc are using it as their current logo -and apparently have for some time. They are requiring proof that it is indeed mine and how long I've had it. Proof can be provided - but it still makes me furious.
They claim to have gotten it from a free clip art site, and I do believe them. It just sparks the whole copyright debate, and with this dammned Orphan Works bill actually passing; Corporations and small businesses alike can easily grab your work from somewhere and there isn't much you can do about it. Unless obviously and easily traced back to the creator - your work is fair game. Doubly so when some twit with a pirated copy of Photoshop clones/crops out your signature. Then what can we do? This further de-values the artist, and the work involved in creating artwork. This allows people to get something for nothing, and at the expense of the artist.
I have dealt with Penguin Books and won - I am not worried about a small hole-in the wall computer company in Indiana. If worse comes to worse I can get another cease and desist letter from my lawyer. I do not hate the company, but I hate the behavior. I hate the fact that people will one - use clip art for a logo instead of finding something original to actually brand their company. And I hate the fact that someone would go through the trouble of getting rid of my initials and date so they can put it on their shitty photobucket or whatever account it was snagged from.
How will our trade and craft be protected? We, (artists) will never see a government subsidy, or compensation for the fact that this Orphan Bill, and internet has done a lot to keep us from making money thusly limiting how we can contribute to our own economy.
I could go on, but you get the gist.Ugh..
